'CSI: NY' investigates ways to give its characters more nuance

STUDIO CITY - The production meeting for "CSI: NY" on a recent Tuesday morning was moving as production meetings go: scene-by-scene, item-by-item, detail-by-detail.

Exactly how much leg would punch through an awning after a fall? At what angle? How would the fabric rip? What color was a soda can? What music would a boombox play? These are the small, hard pieces that, stitched together, make television shows.

The two dozen people camped around a rectangle of tables inside CBS' Radford Studios went through stunts, lighting, props, camera angles, graphics, every tiny move for the episode that would start shooting the next day (and air tonight at 9 on Channel 13).

In the episode, midway through, detectives will question a suspect. Someone asked Anthony E. Zuiker...
